Gold deal between Venezuela and Citibank - Preview

At the end of March, the current 2019, the gold swap deal between the Venezuelan government and the American Citibank ends. The Venezuelan opposition believes that the authorities of the country will not be able to fulfill its conditions, which is why 43 tons of gold can remain in the ownership of the bank.

During the reign of President Nicolas Maduro, several gold swap transactions were concluded between the state and large investment banks. One of such transactions was concluded in April 2015 with the US bank Citibank for a period of 4 years. At the end of March, the time comes when the Venezuelan authorities must return the money to the bank in order to get their gold back.

Last year, Reuters reported that the Venezuelan authorities were trying to negotiate an advance payment in order to guarantee the return of gold. In general, we are talking about 43 tons of gold worth $ 1 billion.
