Gold exports from Switzerland in June 2019 - Preview

The Swiss Customs Service has published official data on the country's foreign trade for June 2019, which also contains information on the export of gold to other countries. Last month was the worst for this indicator since the statistics were published.

According to published data, in June of this year, Switzerland sent only 45 tons of yellow precious metal to other countries. This is the lowest monthly value for all time since the publication of customs data. The value of exported gold is estimated at 1.93 billion francs (1.73 billion euros). Compared with May, the fall in exports was -54%. Compared with June 2018, the decline was -61%. It turns out that June of this year was the worst month for the export of gold since January 2016, when the Swiss customs began to publish for the first time detailed data on the country's export goods.

If we look at the countries, India received only 13 tons of gold in June, which is -75% less than May and -29% less than June 2018. Only 6 tons of precious metal went to China, which is -53% less May, and -90% less than June 2018. China has never imported so little of the yellow precious metal from Switzerland.

Amid falling exports, gold imports to Switzerland rose markedly. 231.92 tons of yellow precious metal worth 6.49 billion francs were imported into the country. It turns out that imports in June grew by + 25% compared to June 2018, and + 41% compared to May 2019. For example, 26 tons were imported from Britain, 24 tons from Thailand, which became a big surprise for the experts. The UAE sent 13.4 tons of gold to the Alpine Republic, thus closing the top three countries leading in the import of precious metals in June.

It is worth recalling that Swiss refineries process almost half of the world's gold. Therefore, this country is an important place in the world for the distribution of precious metals between countries. Gold bars produced in Switzerland are the most liquid. They can be easily sold in any country in the world.
