Gold purity - Preview

The purity of gold is determined in carats. The term "carat" is derived from the seeds of the carob tree, which are used in the countries of the Middle East for weighing. Carats are legumes, each carob bean weighs 1/5 g (200 mg).

The gold weight in carats can be 10, 12, 14, 18, 22 or 24. The greater this indicator, the higher the quality of gold. Pure 24 carat gold is so soft and plastic that it can be molded by hand.

The number of karats indicates how many parts of gold the precious metal consists of, with a maximum of 24.

For example, in a 14-carat precious product, the alloy consists of 14 parts of pure gold out of a possible 24, and the remaining 10 parts include other metals: copper, nickel or zinc.

Thus, a 22-carat piece of jewelry will contain 22 pieces of pure gold and only 2 pieces of other metals.

Converting carats to gold purity is quite simple. You just have to divide the carat number by 24 and then multiply by 100.

The most popular are jewels of 14 and 18 carats, since these levels of carats make it possible to obtain a good balance of durability, quality and price, without causing allergic reactions.
