A group of Russian archaeologists discovered in the Krasnodar Territory during excavations a treasure consisting of gold coins of Byzantium. Coins found date back to the 10th century. At that time, this region was known as the Taman Peninsula.
According to reports, gold coins were hidden in a ceramic jug. The excavation site dates back to the ancient period, and in the 11th century people left it. In total, in the jug there were 28 coins made of pure gold. They depict the faces of the Byzantine rulers.
According to scientists, one of the rulers of that time hid this jug with coins. This could happen in the late 10th or early 11th century. It is worth saying that the treasures of Byzantium were already discovered in different parts of the world, but the find in the Krasnodar Territory is of particular importance to archaeologists. Moreover, it is the only one of its kind in Russia.
According to the Soviet geographer V.V. Kropotkin, during the USSR in the territory of modern Russia, only two such treasures with Byzantine coins were discovered, but nothing is known about their fate - they disappeared without a trace. Rare gold coins will replenish the collection of the Fanagoria Museum Reserve. After research, a unique treasure will be available for review.
